From BBQ Dreams to Burger Bliss: A Journey with Sten’s Burger Stand
Jul 23, 2024In the heart of Dunsmuir, CA, lies an inspiring story of dreams, perseverance, and community. Elissa and John Bostick’s journey from aspiring business owners to successful restaurateurs at Sten’s Burger Strand is a testament to how small steps and continuous learning can turn dreams into reality, with the invaluable guidance from the Women's Business Center (WBC) at JEDI.
Years before purchasing Sten’s, Elissa and John envisioned themselves owning a BBQ joint. John, a BBQ enthusiast with over 20 years of experience at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park, and Elissa, an intake administrator at a local hospital, took business planning classes at the WBC in 2007. Although their dream was deferred, the knowledge they gained became the foundation for their future success.
When their friend Sten Strandburg passed away, his wife Lauri decided to sell the business. The Bosticks bought the restaurant in May 2022 and opened in June 2022. Their venture, offering mouthwatering burgers made from locally sourced Prather Ranch beef and hand-dipped corndogs, quickly became a community favorite.
The path to success wasn't without challenges. Marketing and bookkeeping proved daunting, but with the unwavering support of the WBC at JEDI, Elissa and John learned to manage finances, track inventory, and project income and expenses. WBC’s Marketing Consultant, Kate, provided creative solutions like social media campaigns and customer raffles, which significantly boosted their visibility and customer engagement.
“The information is certainly invaluable that you [Women's Business Center] provide...Just being able to have access to people who have experience in small businesses is empowering." - Elissa Bostick
Elissa and John’s dedication to their business and community is evident in their commitment to high-quality, locally sourced ingredients and their inclusive hiring practices. Despite obstacles, they employed local high school students and planned to hire more for the summer season. The Bosticks are excited about the future, aiming to expand into catering and increase their year-round staff.
Their story highlights the importance of resilience, community, and the right support network. The practical lessons and personalized consultations from WBC at JEDI were crucial in navigating their entrepreneurial journey. Elissa and John embraced the process, developing a love for learning and continuously improving their business skills.
